If you are looking for free software that you can download, the best
site I have found is Nonags.
Their site is divided into two categories: freeware and
shareware.
They originally only provided freeware, so they chose the name nonags,
because there are no nagging reminders to register the software.
Tucows has shareware for many
platforms from Windows 9x, NT, 2000, CE, to Linux.

I use and recommend the following items:
Emachines 700id
This is a good solid machine. I recommend eMachines unless you
are a power user. If you just need a good solid performing
machine,
I have had no problems with mine.
I have purchased memory upgrades for 3 computers from Micron.
They have treated me extremely well, and often offer free two day
shipping.
They have a memory selector on their site that allows you to specify
the
manufacturer and model of your name brand system or motherboard.
For example you can drill down to an eMachines model 700id to match one
of my machines,
or EPoX EP-MVP3C to match the motherboard in my custom system.
I have used AMD processors since my first 286. They have always
performed well and met my expectations.
Linux
Currently I use SuSE but I used Slackware
first. Slackware seems to be a smaller distribution, which takes
less space, but it is more for experienced Linux or Command line users.
Western Digital Hard Drives
I prefer Western Digital drives, because they have always been
extremely
reliable in my systems.
Star
Office 5 Sun has released a new version of Star Office but I have
not used it much yet.
Open Office is a free
