Fatal Exception errors with a Umax scanner

Fatal Exception occurs when you try to scan

If you have a Scanner attached to your Windows 95, 98, or 98 Second Edition PC you may receive Fatal Exception errors, at various times.

Other causes

I recently had a customer who received a "Fatal Exception 06" every time she tried to access her Umax Astra 1220P scanner. The scanner had worked previously on this machine, and worked fine when connected to another PC running Windows 95. She was using Windows 98 Second Edition.

After much research and testing, I discovered that the problem was related to her version of Mcafee Antivirus. If we disabled it, the scanner worked fine.
